After a 33-year break, a Romanian, Amalia Lică, won a medal at the Rhythmic Gymnastics World Championships; the tennis player Sorana Cîrstea won the WTA 250 tournament in Cleveland.

At the Rhythmic Gymnastics World Championships in Rio de Janeiro, the Romanian athlete Amalia Lică won the silver medal in the clubs final on Sunday. The gold went to Darja Varfolomeev (Germany), and the bronze to Bulgaria’s Stiliana Nikolova. Romania had won only one other medal at the Rhythmic Gymnastics World Championships: a bronze in the rope event in 1992, in Brussels, thanks to Irina Deleanu, the current president of the Romanian Rhythmic Gymnastics Federation.

 

Romania finished the World Junior Swimming Championships in Otopeni, near Bucharest, with two medals. Daria Silişteanu won the silver in the 100-m backstroke, and Robert Badea won the bronze in the 400-m medley. A total of 930 athletes from 124 countries took part in the competition. Romania fielded 18 athletes, a record number for this kind of competition.

 

The tennis player Sorana Cîrstea won her third WTA tournament on Sunday. In Cleveland, USA, a WTA 250 competition, she defeated Ann Li (US), 6-2, 6-4 in the final. Sorana, who had come from the qualifiers, did not lose a single set at the tournament in Ohio. She was awarded a check of US 36,300 and 268 WTA points, climbing to 71st place in the world singles ranking. The Romanian athlete will play in the first round of the US Open, the last Grand Slam tournament of the year, against Solana Sierra (Argentina).

 

Over the weekend, games counting for the 7th round of the Romanian football Super League took place. On Friday, in Arad, UTA tied 1-all with Unirea Slobozia, while in Clinceni, Rapid Bucharest beat Metaloglobus 2-1. On Saturday, FC Botoşani defeated Csikszereda 3-1 on home turf, and Dinamo Bucharest beat Universitatea Cluj 1-0 away from home. On Sunday, Oţelul Galaţi thrashed CFR Cluj 4-1 at home. Universitatea Craiova won 2-0 against Petrolul Ploieşti, and FC Argeş won with the same score on the National Arena in Bucharest against FCSB. The last game of the round, Hermannstadt vs Farul Constanţa, is scheduled on Monday. Craiova leads the standings, with 19 points. Rapid follows, with 15. (AMP)
