Romania’s football side secured a 1-0 win against Austria in Bucharest on Sunday in a match counting towards the World Cup 2026 qualifiers.

Virgil Ghita scored for the Romanians a couple of seconds from time, firing home from a cross he received from Ianis Hagi.

The Romanians managed a better show on Sunday than its previous performances in the preliminaries. Our footballers fought hard for control on the pitch, the defense line made fewer mistakes and were even able to mount bold attacks.

Following the result, Romania ranks third in Group H of the preliminaries with ten points. Austria is first with 15 points followed by Bosnia-Herzegovina with 13. Cyprus comes fourth with 8 points and San Marino last with no points.

The Romanian national side still stands chances to finish on the second position, which would allow the trainees of coach Mircea Lucescu to go into the play-off as a top side, and increase their chances to qualify for the World Cup 2026. However, for this, our footballers have to win their last games in the group, against Bosnia-Herzegovina and San Marino in November. Bosnia must also win their match against Austria. Romania has ensured a place into the play-offs as a winner of their Nations League group in spring.

From the World Weightlifting Championship that just ended in Førde, Norway, the Romanian delegation walked away with four medals. Three of these were won by Mihaela Cambei in the 53 kilogram category; gold in the snatch event and silver in the jerk and total events. The fourth medal was won in the competition’s last day by the Romanian athlete of Cuban descent, Luis Lauret Rodriguez in the snatch event of the 110 kilogram category, where he lifted 188 kilograms.

The Romanian women’s volleyball side CSO Voluntari has won the Romanian Supercup. CSO, which is also holder of Romania’s Cup clinched a 3-1 win against the en titre champions Alba Blaj. CSO has so far won the aforementioned title twice the same as Alba, which secured the title in 2021 and 2023.
