Moldova’s new Parliament has an ambitious mandate: European integration, the reform of the judiciary, the reorganisation of public administration and consolidating democracy. Six parties and an independent candidate made it into Parliament following the elections on 28th September, with 55 seats out of 101 belonging to the pro-European Action and Solidarity Party. Igor Grosu, the party’s leader, was reelected as Parliament speaker, and he announced that signing the EU accession treaty by 2028 is the main priority. The Republic of Moldova must take advantage of its historic chance of European integration, said Igor Grosu:

“Moldova is ready to move forwards with its accession talks. We have a unique chance to become the Parliament of European integration. It is the duty of our generation not to miss this chance. In the following years, we are committed to raising living standards, modernise our institutions and make investments to ensure economic growth. In the following years, with the support of our European friends, we will build more roads and hospitals, we will modernise schools and universities, we will support the industrialisation of agriculture, we will encourage exports and the development of our businesses, we will double sales of goods and services produced here, in the Republic of Moldova, and which we will export around the world. We have the enormous opportunity to transform the country, which has not happened in the last 30 years. Let’s commit ourselves to govern the country for the benefit of all citizens, regardless of who they voted for.”

In her Parliament address, Moldova’s president Maia Sandu said the country is passing through its most complicated period since its independence and it needs unity and dedication more than ever. She underlined that the mission of the MPs is to preserve peace and to act exclusively in the best interest of the Republic of Moldova in order to take the country into the European Union:

“I urge you to contribute to the harmonisation of the national legal framework to the European one and to adopt a sustained pace of passing the necessary legislation to make progress in the negotiation process so that we may sign the EU accession treaty during this Parliament.”

Maia Sandu called for stepping up the reform of the judiciary, finalising the vetting of judges and prosecutors and consolidating the rule of law, emphasising that democracy can only work with strong institutions. She also reiterated support for the reintegration of the Moldovan citizens from the left-bank of the Nistru river and called for the pull-out of the Russian troops from break-away Transnistria. She also requested the support of all political forces and of society to build a modern, European and prosperous state. The other parliamentary parties said they would make active opposition, each with its own priorities, from ridding institutions of political interference to supporting pro-European initiatives.
