DIPLOMACY The annual meeting of the Romanian diplomacy kicked off today in Bucharest, and according to the Foreign Ministry it will offer a common vision essential in the present period of global risks. Under the title ‘A Decade of Changes, the Romanian Diplomacy’s Impact’ the meeting led by Foreign Minister, Oana Ţoiu, brings together in Bucharest the heads of Romania’s diplomatic missions and consular offices abroad as well as other high Romanian officials. The working sessions will be devoted to the new strategic realities in the region, the economic diplomacy and the OECD accession. Aspects related to the consolidation of a united Europe, safe and prosperous prepared for enlargement will also be tackled. Among the special invitees this year there are the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaja Kallas, who will be addressing the participants in a video conference, and the Polish Foreign Minister, Radoslaw Sikorski. The conference in Bucharest will also be attended by Mihai Popsoi, the Foreign Minister of the Republic of Moldova. In the meeting’s second day, the heads of Romania’s diplomatic missions and consular offices abroad will be received by President Nicusor Dan.
FESTIVAL The Radio Chamber Orchestra starts the second day of the International Classical Music Festival, George Enescu, at the Romanian Athenaeum in Bucharest under the guidance of violinist David Grimal and with pianist Roman Lopatynski – the winner of the last year’s edition of the George Enescu International Contest – performing. The second event today is a concert given by the Ukrainian Freedom Orchestra founded in 2022 by the Canadian-Ukrainian conductor Keri-Lynn Wilson in response to the Russian invasion of Ukraine. The ensemble brings together top Ukrainian instrumentalists from Ukraine, exiles or members of European orchestras. The 27th edition of the prestigious festival officially kicked off on Sunday with Dan Dediu’s Concerto for Orchestra under the baton of Cristian Macelaru, the artistic director of the festival. The night ended with the ‘Romanian Poem’ the first work published by Enescu. Radio Romania is co-producer of the George Enescu festival.
TENNIS The Romanian tennis player, Gabriela Ruse, will today be up against the Australian of Russian extraction, Daria Kasatkina, in the first round of the US Open, the year’s last Grand Slam tournament, which kicked off on Sunday. The other two Romanians on the main draw, Jaqueline Cristian and Sorana Cirstea, will be playing in the first round of the singles Danielle Collins of the USA and Argentinean Solana Sierra. Cirstea is attending the US Open after her win in the WTA 250 tournament in Cleveland, Ohio. At the age of 35, Cirstea secured her third WTA single title after those in Tashkent in 2008 and Istanbul, 2021.
RALLY Trade unionists in Romania’s education system have again picketed the headquarters of the Ministry of Education and Research in Bucharest on Monday protesting the new measures endorsed by the government for reducing the budget deficit. They are dissatisfied with the increased number of working hours, the rising number of students in classes and the funding of the country’s education system. Trade unions in Education commenced a series of protest activities in late July and announced they would carry on their protests by picketing the Ministry of Education and the Government building. They have also planned a protest march on September 8, when the new school year is to begin.
