Gold, silver and bronze for Romania at the World Kayak-canoe Championships. In Duisburg, Germany, athletes from Romania stepped onto the podium three times. On Friday, Catalin Chirila became gold medalist in the single canoe race of 500 meters. On Saturday, he reaped silver in the Olympic 1,000 meter race and also qualified for the Olympic Games in Paris next year. In the double canoe race of 1000 meters, Oleg Nuţă and Ilie Sprincean won the bronze medal on Saturday, while ranking sixth in the 500 meter finals on Sunday, a result which secured them plane tickets to Paris. Romania has so far had 10 athletes qualified for the upcoming Olympics.


Unfortunately Romania has left the European Womens Volleyball Championships after being outperformed 3-1 by France in the round of 16. However, being among Europes first 16 volleyball sides is a performance as compared to our sides latest shows. Two years ago Romania came last but one in the aforementioned competition, ranking 23rd. The best Romanian performance in this event happened in 1963, when our players became bronze medalists on their own ground.


Lets have a look at the latest from womens handball. CSM Bucharest won Romanias Supercup after a 31-22 win against Rapid Bucharest on Sunday. Cristina Neagu scored most of the goals for CSM, six. In the Supercups second final, Dunarea Braila outperformed CSM Targu Jiu 35-33.


US Open, the years last Grand Slam tournament, kicks off at Flushing Meadows with five Romanian players on the main draw. Among them Elena Gabriela Ruse, who qualified after a 7-6, 6-3 win against Dayana Yastremska of Ukraine. The others are Sorana Cirstea, Irina Begu, Ana Bogdan and Patricia Tig.


Last weekend saw the football games counting towards the seventh leg of Romanias Superleague. On Friday in Galati, local side Otelul and FC Voluntari ended their game in a draw, 2-all. Rapid Bucharest secured an away 5-3 win against FCU Craiova 1948 while in Cluj, western Romania, local side CFR clinched a 3-1 win against FC Botosani. In Bucharest, local side Dinamo ended in a one-all draw their match against Petrolul Ploiesti. On Sunday in Ovidiu, southern Romania, local side Farul Constanţa obtained a 2-0 against Universitatea Craiova.
